Osmosis is the movement of water from an area of low solute concentration to one of higher concentration through a semipermeable membrane. Osmosis is a naturally occurring biological process that seeks to equalise the concentration of the solutions on either side of a membrane. It is fundamental to maintaining balance, which is the hallmark of a healthy mouth. We used the principle of osmosis to formulate Osmotonic, an osmotic toothpaste that helps you maintain balance to sustain oral health. The salt crystals in the formula creates a high solute concentration in the mouth. This causes the excess water within inflamed gums to exit the cells in order to balance the concentrations on either side of the gum cell membrane.
